A Celebration to Honor Wildland Firefighters


The Western Region FFLA Conference will be held June 1-3 at the City Hall Chambers, 211 West Aspen, Flagstaff, Arizona. The conference will celebrate wildland firefighting and will honor the lookouts, hotshots, smokejumpers, and other people who fight fire in the wildlands. A display will be set up to highlight the equipment and tools of wildland firefighting; a parking lot will feature displays of equipment from several agencies in Arizona. Indoor displays will be set up in the City Hall. The conference will be organized to present lookout topics on Friday (June 1) and those that are more general on Saturday.

Forest Fire Lookout AssociationRegistration and display set-up will start at 8:00 a.m. on Friday; at 8:30, host Dave Lorenz will kick off the day's program. Activities are scheduled through 5:00 p.m. and the Board of Directors meeting (open to all) will take place after dinner on Friday.

At 8:00 a.m. on Saturday, registration and set-up for the day's events will begin, followed by orientation for the day and presentations. Saturday's schedule will include forest restoration programs, awards ceremonies, and displays. The afternoon will feature a public display of firefighting vehicles and equipment, and the conference banquet will follow the 5:30 p.m. social hour. An evening program and the traditional auction will follow the banquet.

Sunday's schedule will include a number of tours, with options available for either hikes or drives to lookouts. Tours of the Hall of Flame Museum in Phoenix will be available for anyone going that direction.

The mayor of Flagstaff will make a city proclamation honoring wildland firefighters, the agencies who protect the area, and the citizens, businesses, and organizations who take fuels reduction measures.
