OSHKOSH 2005

Our campsite at Hickory Oaks Campground in Oshkosh, across the river from the airport. Joe's camper at left, my tent next to that, my 4Runner at right, Steven's tent in lower left.
More campsite. Picnic table and lots of chairs and a fire pit on the far site of Joe's trailer. Hickory nut trees behind picnic tables, lake off to the right.
Mark and Lee rented a little cabin, which includes a microwave and fridge. Lee's white Pontiac at left. Tented guests are free if you rent a cabin, so I got a good deal on lodging for the trip.
Settled in at the picnic table Thursday afternoon. Left to right: Lee's son Steven, friend Big Jimbo, Mark and Lee, and Mark's friend Darrell (Joe's son and Derrick's dad). The campgrounds are thick with hickory and oak trees, and there's a nice little lake. Great spot.
My tent set up behind the 4Runner. Mark said, "You didn't know you had the lakeside view, huh?" There's a couple little paddle boats for rent, and a few kids swam in the little lake, which apparently is loaded with bass and sunfish amongst the weeds. Big surprise? Very few mosquitos.
Friday morning we were up early and rolled out for a shot of coffee, then loaded up and headed for a café for breakfast Wisconsin style. From there we drove to the airport, parked, and hopped the shuttle bus that takes you around the "North 40" camping area to the main gates. Our first target was the warbirds area, but we pulled over by the runway for a while to watch traffic.
You never know what will be coming in or going out here! But you can bet the traffic will be heavy and the aircraft will be varied.
Because we were near the warbirds area, we saw a lot of them coming and going Friday morning. Pretty much all of us had warbirds at the top of the list of aircraft we wanted to see. We could have stayed for hours watching people fly in and out of this area.
Beech 18 -- which in my mind is about as pretty as a plane gets. Of all the aircraft there, the Swifts and these Beech 18s were probably my favorites.
